Palermo partecipates at 2017 CIMAM in Singapore

The City Hall of Palermo was present, represented by assessor Andrea Cusumano, at the annual conference of CIMAM – International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art, an organization gathering the directors and curators of the world’s leading museums and contemporary art institutions – held at the National Gallery in Singapore from 10 to 12 November.

Founded in 1962, CIMAM’s vision is a world where the contribution of museums, collections and archives of modern and contemporary art to the cultural, social and economic well-being of society is recognized and respected.

Objectives 2017 – 2020 are: organize the annual conference around issues of current and future relevance, establish criteria for institution and individual membership to reflect the changing nature of art museums globally, expand CIMAM´s membership and ensure global reach, ensure financial stability, maintain good relationship with ICOM (The International Council of Museums  created in 1946, joining museums and museum professionals with a global scope), develop Museum Watch as an effective instrument for promoting ethical and professional standards.

During the conference it was spoken about the role of museums in civil society and how they can be positive actors to counter cultural re-emergence of phenomena of xenophobia, racism, isolation and cultural protection, reflecting the social function of art as a tool for dialogue and meeting among peoples.

In this perspective, Cusumano – invited as speaker to represent one of the nine cultural design perspectives that provided inspiration for this year’s debate – told the vision and the project of Palermo’s city of welcome and the Italian Capital of Culture 2018 and illustrated the Manifesta 12 project.

Once again – say Mayor Leoluca Orlando and assessoror Cusumano – Palermo lives its double national and international dimension as the Capital of Culture, a meeting place, reflection and cultural innovation.

A wider recognition that is the fundamental principle of a new perspective of social, cultural and economic development. “
